With hearings to be held in Geneva next week by the UN Human Rights Council inquiry into the Israel-Gaza war, headed by Judge Richard Goldstone, it is interesting to recall that former UN rights chief Mary Robinson, as well as former Finnish president Martti Ahtisaari, were among the many international personalities that refused U.N. offers to head the mission... It is a mission created by the biased Human Rights Council, and it is to that body that team members will report in September. [more]
Thank Canada for its moral leadership at the U.N. in defending true principles of human rights, standing up to dictators, and voting against anti-Israel resolutions that legitimize and launder Hamas terror under the banner of international law.
The U.S. joined the U.N. Human Rights Council today for the first time. More than half of the 2009-2010 council members -- 25 out of 47 -- fail to meet basic democracy standards. Can the U.S. effect change? Can a majority be found to pass resolutions that hold the worst abusers accountable for violations? Our recent blog postings on the failed Sri Lanka session suggest the answer is no. But yesterday's qualified victory regarding Sudan holds out some hope.
