Speak Out Against the Human Rights Council's Anti-Israel Bias

Tomorrow the new UN Human Rights Council will meet in special session, called by the Council's Arab and Islamic states, to denounce Israel. This will be the third special session in the Council’s 5-month history—all against Israel. And the Arab- and Islamic-group text that is certain to be adopted will become the new body’s fourth condemnatory resolution—all, again, against Israel. Not a single resolution has been passed against any other UN member state—not even egregious human rights violators like Burma, China, Cuba, North Korea, or Sudan. Make your voice heard: urge influential European and South American Council members to oppose the Arab and Islamic groups' subversion of the Council for their own anti-Israel political ends.

I urge you to oppose the one-sided condemnation of Israel that is proposed for Wednesday’s Special Session of the UN Human Rights Council on the situation in Gaza.

The text uses inflammatory language, distorts international law, and falsely describes last week’s tragic events in Beit Hanoun as deliberate “Israeli targeting” of Palestinian civilians.
 
The draft fails to mention Hamas and Islamic Jihad terrorism, the thousands of Kassam rockets launched from Beit Hanoun and elsewhere in Gaza, or the Palestinian smuggling of thirty tons of explosives into Gaza since Israel’s disengagement.  The draft also fails to mention any Palestinian Authority responsibility for taking action against these and other violations.  Any text that departs from these basic red lines is one-sided and unfair.

Consequently, I ask you to uphold the equality principles of the UN Charter by firmly opposing this biased resolution, which is counter-productive to the cause of peace.  A solid “No” vote by the Council’s democracies will stand as a bulwark against ongoing attempts to subvert the new Human Rights Council.
