Liu Xiaobo was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for his “his long and non-violent struggle for fundamental human rights in China.” He is currently in a Chinese prison, serving a 11-year sentence for allegedly "inciting subversion of state power." China has now placed his wife, Liu Xia, under house arrest to prevent her from traveling to Norway and receiving the award on Liu’s behalf.
In his October 8 statement, UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon failed to congratulate Liu Xiaobo, or to call for his release. Instead, he actually praised China’s “remarkable” advances, and for “steadily joining the international mainstream in its adherence to recognized human rights instruments and practices.” Urge Mr. Ban to speak truth to power and call on China to release this political prisoner now.
